I had a 40hp Johnson that would do the same thing (overheat alarm at odd times) that tended to occur after first good run and then coming off plane. Turns out the slime and sludge of running in silty water had seriously weakened the water pump/impeller assembly. agreed, it sounds like worn impeller.
