Ordinary hard-hull catamarans have significant drawbacks: most require trailers, maintenance, and storage space, are difficult to master, and are generally quite expensive. The Sea Eagle 14-foot inflatable SailCat, by contrast, is simple and fun for beginners and families to sail, with a cost that's roughly six times less than a traditional catamaran. Unlike other catamarans, the SailCat uses a lateen rig, the simplest and easiest-to-use sail rig design around. The lateen rig sports just two lines--one to raise the sail and one to trim it--meaning new sailors, including pre-teens, will return from a day on the waves with smiles on their faces. It's a marked difference from traditional rigging, which is a confusing web that beginners can't hope to handle confidently without years of practice and expensive sailing lessons. The SailCat is easy to set up, with a patent-pending folding frame that incorporates rugged but light aluminum slats and slide-in underbars. To use, simply unpack and unroll the SailCat--the whole thing packs neatly into two bags that store in your car trunk--inflate, and go sailing. As the hulls inflate, air pressure will clamp all the components tightly together to make the SailCat rigid and tight as a drum. You'll go from your car trunk to out on the water in less than 12 minutes. Tipping the scales at just 97 pounds fully rigged, the SailCat is easy to transport when packed in its bags or even fully rigged. But don't let the full weight fool you, as this is one rugged little sailboat. You can sail anywhere with confidence in the SailCat, from rivers to ponds to the ocean. The hulls are made of 1,000-denier "crocodile hide" material--the same used in Sea Eagle's high-performance Sport Runabouts--while the mast and hardware are made of nautical-grade, anodized aluminum, a highly specialized alloy that combines light weight, tremendous strength, and a high resistance to corrosion even from salt water. Best of all, the SailCat requires only a light hosing at the end of sailing season for maintenance.
